Crenshaw Lanes, located on the campus of Florida State University, and The FSU Bowling Teams are sponsoring the Annual Marvin Overby Memorial Sport Bowing Tournament, Friday February 24 – Sunday February 26, 2012. The tournament, which takes place at Crenshaw Lanes, is a tribute to long time FSU Bowling Coach and Crenshaw Lanes Director Marvin Overby who passed away on July 30, 2004.

Overby was an important figure in Tallahassee bowling circles for almost 40 years. He was an outspoken proponent of Sport Bowling, a more challenging system of applying lane conditioner which emphasizes the skill of the bowler. As the long time coach of the FSU Bowling Teams, his nurturing and supportive coaching style helped many FSU bowlers achieve great success. His 2001 Men’s Team and 2003 Women’s Team both advanced to the championship round of the Intercollegiate Bowling Championships.

The Marvin Overby Memorial Sport tournament, with competitors drawn from Florida, Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina, will consist of singles, doubles and team division for both youth and adults. Squads are available on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Entry forms can be found at http://union.fsu.edu/crenshaw/ or may be picked up at Crenshaw Lanes. A reception honoring Marvin Overby and announcement of the recipients of this year’s Marvin Overby Memorial Scholarship will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 27th . An announcement of the full-endowment of scholarship will follow, establishing it as a permanent scholarship for FSU bowlers.

Crenshaw Lanes, a twelve lane bowling center located in the Oglesby Union on the campus of Florida State University has been an FSU tradition since 1964. Along with bowling, Crenshaw offers ten full sized billiards tables. Programs include a number of bowling leagues, billiards tournaments, intramurals, parties, cosmic bowling, late night programming and open bowling. Crenshaw Lanes is a popular party spot for student and university groups.

Tallahassee, FL— A living legend in pocket billiards, Nick Varner has become one of the sport’s most popular and sought after celebrities. Through his many television appearances, exhibitions, magazine articles, books, instructional videos and TV commentary, Nick Varner shares his remarkable expertise and enthusiasm with millions of pocket billiard players throughout the world. The billiards legend will provide an exhibition and share stories at Crenshaw Billiards on Friday, January 6, 2011, beginning at 8pm. The event is free to the public.

Currently considered by many as the world’s Best All-Around and Best 9-Ball Player, Nick Varner picked up his first pool cue at age five when his father, Nicholas, bought a small pool room in Grandview, Indiana. His lifetime dream of winning the World Championship came true in New York City in 1980. It would be his first of eight championships. In this same year, he won the 1980 BCA National 8-Ball Championship, prompting Billiards Digest to name him "Player Of The Year." In 1982, Varner captured the World 9-Ball Championship in Atlantic City. ABC televised the tournament on Wide World Of Sports with Howard Cosell as commentator.

Throughout his career, Nick Varner has established himself as one of the all-time greats of the game. His skill, strategy and and cue ball control are legendary. Writer Ben Lucien Burman, probably summed it up best after watching Nick perform at the Players Club in New York, when he said "To watch Nick Varner at a pool table is like watching a portrait being painted by Rembrandt." In July 1992, he was inducted into the Billiards Congress of America Hall of Fame.
