Planetarium Tour & Movie
Richards Building, Pat Thomas Planetarium, 108
Join scientists who are investigating the boundary between our Solar System and the rest of our galaxy in IBEX: Search for the Edge of the Solar System. Designed for visitors with an appreciation for the challenges of space science and a desire to learn more about science research, IBEX: Search for the Edge of the Solar System follows the creation of NASA's Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX). Audiences will get an in-depth look at the mission and how IBEX is collecting high-speed atoms to create a map of our Solar System's boundary.
The Pat Thomas Planetarium first opened its doors in 1982, and has been serving the university and the community ever since. The equipment consists of a Spitz 512 star field (which can project the planets, constellations, and thousands of stars) and over 100 various projectors, including a coordinate system, ecliptic and various slide and video projectors. We use the planetarium not only as a teaching aid in astronomy and physics courses, but also as part of community outreach; every year, school children of all ages come to enjoy our shows.
