In Spring 2014, the Oglesby Union Board, in collaboration with Guest Services, set out to transform the Krentzman Lounge into a space more befitting a modern student union. The desire was to make the space into a “collaboration zone” where ideas and thoughts could be exchanged in a welcoming environment. Vendors were contacted and plans for the renovated space began to take shape. Over the course of the summer, changes began to happen and on August 4th, the project was finally completed.
Though the Krentzman Lounge has always been a “talk friendly” zone, the old layout promoted more of a quiet and non-collaborative space. Visitors to the lounge today will notice several key differences. First, seven workstations that can accommodate up to 4 users each have been installed. A prominent feature of these workspaces is an LCD monitor that students can utilize to work on group projects, presentations, tutoring, etc. No need to pass around the laptop to see a project taking shape. Cables to connect students’ laptops to the monitors are available for checkout at the Guest Services front desk. The old projection-style television and worn out sectional sofa have been replaced by an 80” LCD television and comfortable theater-style seating. On the other side of the room, two high-top tables are accompanied by six high-back bar stools each and provide the perfect spot to gather as friends or classmates. The existing couches, loveseats, and plush chairs have been rearranged in such a way to provide a comfortable place to come and chat, relax, and hang out between classes or any other time. Visitors to the lounge will also note an abundance of natural light as the windows have been tinted and the blinds permanently opened to let in as much sunlight as possible. In all, the feel resembles that of a comfortable coffee shop where students are encouraged to come and linger.
Whether you need a place to come and work on a group project or presentation, need a spot to watch the Noles take down another opponent, or just want to come and hang out for a while, the Krentzman Lounge, located on the second floor above Chili’s, is the place for you.
