Crenshaw Lanes to Host 6th Annual Overby Tournament

February 8th, 2010
marvin_overby

Crenshaw Lanes, located on the campus of Florida State University, and The FSU Bowling Teams are sponsoring the 6th Annual Marvin Overby Memorial Sport Bowing Tournament, Friday February 26 – Sunday February 28, 2010. The tournament, which takes place at Crenshaw Lanes, is a tribute to long time FSU Bowling Coach and Crenshaw Lanes Director Marvin Overby who passed away on July 30, 2004.

Overby was an important figure in Tallahassee bowling circles for almost 40 years. He was an outspoken proponent of Sport Bowling, a more challenging system of applying lane conditioner which emphasizes the skill of the bowler. As the long time coach of the FSU Bowling Teams, his nurturing and supportive coaching style helped many FSU bowlers achieve great success. His 2001 Men’s Team and 2003 Women’s Team both advanced to the championship round of the Intercollegiate Bowling Championships.

Haitian Art: Life and Culture

February 2nd, 2010
haiti-release-image

The Oglesby Gallery is currently exhibiting a collection of Haitian artwork – from the personal collection of Joseph Ducasse – on the life, culture, and natural environment of the Caribbean nation and the Haitian people. The oil on canvas paintings vary from scenes of everyday life, indigenous flora and fauna, to more abstract depictions infused with representations of historic significance and cultural beliefs. We encourage students and the general public to view the visiting collection during normal gallery hours (M-F 8am – 10pm, S-S 12noon – 10pm). The exhibit will run from February 5th to March 5th. An open reception for the exhibit will be hosted on February 12th, 6pm-8pm.

The Oglesby Gallery is located on the second floor of the FSU Union in Krentzman Lounge (directly above the food court).
