Four Podcast Recommendations for Beginners

””In the ongoing age of memes, streaming, and viral videos, the vacuum of available content can often be overwhelming. While we are fortunate that there is a seemingly endless amount of entertainment for all of us to enjoy, it is often difficult to find something that suits our individual interests. For example, I often searched for content that would not only entertain me, but content that was educational, engaging, and thought-provoking. That is when I discovered the wonderous world of podcasts.

Podcasts have emerged as one of the dominating mediums in the entertainment industry. Most content, like televisions shows or TikTok videos, requires attention to a screen. Podcasts on the other hand give consumers the liberty to engage with content solely through listening. There are also so many podcasts to choose from that cover an array of subjects; from history to art to science to politics, there is a podcast for everyone. For those looking for a refreshing, entertaining, and education content, I have compiled a list of four podcast recommendations that I believe are worth your time:

  1. Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard
    • Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard is, of course, hosted by Dax Shepard along with his equally lovable friend and co-host Monica Padman. The pair created the show in an attempt to have down-to-earth conversations with people from all walks of life. Since its inception, Dax and Monica have spoken to everyone from climate scientists to actors to neurosurgeons to musicians. Given the diverse group of guests, the podcast also covers a wide range of subjects. Monica and Dax also frequently talk about their own personal struggles in a truly authentic and relatable way. From listening to the show, I have learned about filmmaking, religion, government, music, climate science, and social justice, and I think the podcast has enriched my understanding of the world around me. Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard can be found for free on Apple Podcast, iHeartRadio Podcasts, and Spotify.
  2. Revisionist History
    • Revisionist History is a podcast that I have recently discovered. The show is centered around Malcolm Gladwell and his attempt to explain the misunderstood. Each week, he travels back in time and explores something from history that was perhaps misunderstood or misrepresented. Gladwell’s expansive intellect paired with his knack for storytelling makes each episode unique and interesting. The show often forces listeners to question their own understanding of history and social norms. Revisionist History can be found for free on Apple Podcast, Spotify, and www.revisionisthistory.com.
  3. Pod Save the World
    • Pod Save the World is the perfect podcast for political enthusiasts or anyone who wants to learn more about current events around the globe. While Pod Save the World’s sister podcast, Pod Save America, focuses solely on domestic affairs, Pod Save the World explains events that are happening all around the world. The show is hosted by two former employees of the Obama administration, Tommy Vietor and Ben Rhodes. While Tommy and Ben are well-educated on foreign affairs, they explain global events in an easily comprehensible and interesting way. From journalists to diplomats to activists, Tommy and Ben often invite fascinating guests to talk about current events. While the traditional news can be divisive and exhausting, Pod Save the World is an informative and refreshing way to stay engaged with global news. Pod Save the World can be found for free on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and www.crooked.com.
  4. Anna Faris is Unqualified
    • This is the first podcast I ever listened to, and three years later, I am still just as big of a fan of the show as I was back then. Host, Anna Faris, has a different celebrity guest on each episode to talk about everything and anything. Her quirky personality and quick wit encourage her guests to come out of their shells, and we often get to see new sides of celebrities. She also keeps things exciting by doing role-playing activities with her guests. From “What Would You Do?” to “Deal breakers,” Anna gets her very famous guests to answer personal and often crazy questions. I highly recommend this podcast for anyone that’s looking for something that’s fun and light-hearted. Anna Faris is Unqualified can be found on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and www.unqualified.com.
